Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report early analysis show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
An important political figure said the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
